Microsoft preparing Windows Blue public preview with significant search improvements

Microsoft is working towards a public preview version of Windows Blue. Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have revealed that the software giant is aggressively targeting a summer launch date for Windows Blue, ensuring its development cycle is short. Microsoft recently passed Milestone 1 for Windows Blue, but the company is now readying a Milestone Preview which will form the basis for a public preview

The public preview, first reported by win8china, will launch within the next few months, allowing existing Windows 8 users to test and provide feedback before Microsoft readies the final version of Windows Blue. We understand that Microsoft is aiming to only have one preview release for Blue. Features are still being prepared for Blue, but one of the biggest changes is an improvement to the search charm functionality.

Bing will play a big part in Windows Blue

We're told that the Bing team is working closely on Windows Blue to improve search in a significant way. A number of scenarios are being targeted, including the ability for users to search for a movie and have apps surface that content and provide a quick way to play it. The current implementation of search in Windows 8 supports deep search within apps, but users currently have to select those apps to search within them. Blue will expand on that, providing apps are updated to support it, by extending the search abilities of the OS.

Blue is expected to be made available to existing Windows 8 users by the end of the summer, with support for new 7- and 8-inch devices and Internet Explorer 11 built-in. Microsoft is also preparing a Blue update to its Windows Phone operating system and other services as a project to further integrate all of its software offerings.

Oracle CEO Ellison's daughter pans for Oscar gold

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Seven years ago Megan Ellison took a leave from the University of Southern California to climb the mountains of Nepal. On Sunday, the 27-year-old daughter of billionaire Oracle CEO Larry Ellison hopes to climb the Dolby Theater stage in Hollywood to accept the Best Picture Oscar for "Zero Dark Thirty."

It could be a tough ascent for Ellison, who spent $43 million to produce the film, which is nominated for five Academy Awards. Director Kathryn Bigelow's drama about the mission to kill Osama bin Laden was passed over for a Golden Globe, often a predictor of the Oscars, and also missed out on the Screen Actors Guild's top film prize. "Argo" took both.

Still, the younger Ellison has scaled Hollywood's rungs of influence and power with startling rapidity despite scarcely a dozen films to her credit.

She already has Oscar experience, helping to finance the 2010 Jeff Bridges film "True Grit," nominated for 10 Oscars.

This year, she produced director Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master," about a charismatic sect leader played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, which earned him and co-stars Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams Oscar nominations.

"She is bringing great projects to the screen and doing good things for this business," said Bill Gerber, who produced the Clint Eastwood film "Gran Torino" and has not met Ellison. "She is like the legendary producer Hal Wallis ("Casablanca"), who bet on filmmakers and let them realize their dreams."

Deep pockets help. Larry Ellison's only daughter has a hefty trust fund to draw on, and is one of a growing number of wealthy business scions who employ their family coffers to bankroll movies.

Teddy Schwarzman, the 33-year-old son of Blackstone Group Chief Executive Officer Stephen Schwarzman, produced this year's Mark Walhberg film "Broken City." John Powers Middleton, the 29-year-old son of Philadelphia Phillies part-owner John S. Middleton, is producing nine films and the planned TV series "Bates Motel," according to film information website IMDB.com.

Megan Ellison's 30-year-old sibling, David, raised $350 million in debt and equity in 2010 and produces big-budget action films with Viacom's Paramount Pictures, such as this year's "Star Trek into Darkness."

His sister largely keeps to herself in a town where glad-handing, fancy parties and showy appearances is currency. She doesn't give interviews. She took a power lunch with "Master" director Paul Thomas Anderson at a neighborhood eatery called Jerry's Deli and has gone to meetings on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Ellison declined to comment for this story through her publicist and did not respond to calls to the office of her company, Annapurna Pictures, or messages left on her Facebook page.

EQUESTRIAN TO ANGEL

Since setting up Annapurna in 2010, Ellison has become a prolific producer, having helped finance 11 films. Four others are in various stages of production, according to IMBD.com.

Last year, she and brother David split the $15 million to secure the rights to "The Terminator" franchise, sold as part of a bankruptcy proceeding, outbidding Lions Gate and other studios. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently told reporters he hopes to join the cast of "Terminator Five."

With studios shutting down specialty film divisions and filmmakers finding it increasingly difficult to get financing, Hollywood welcomes someone with a large checkbook and a genuine interest in their films.

"The Master" languished till Ellison was shown a script, the film's producer, JoAnne Sellar, recalled in production notes for the movie.

"Megan Ellison appeared like an angel who swooped in and said, ?I love this project and let's do it,'" said Sellar. "That's when things really began to happen."

Jessica Chastain, nominated for an Oscar for her lead role in "Zero Dark Thirty," says Ellison pushed her to take the part.

"'We have this film, and Kathryn Bigelow wants you," the actress recalled Ellison saying, in an interview with Vanity Fair. "'We went to your agent and were told that you were busy. I cannot accept that for an answer.'"

Ellison makes quick decisions, a trait filmmakers like. It only took two meetings to convince her to back "Zero Dark Thirty," said screenwriter and producer Mark Boal, who said he and Bigelow chose her over other interested financiers.

"She loves films and she was very enthusiastic about this one. What's not to like?" said Boal. "She has her own ideas, but she let us do what we thought best for this film."

The young producer has backed her share of financial misfires, including "The Master," which cost $32 million to produce and has only generated $26.2 million in worldwide ticket sales, according to the site Box Office Mojo. Other flops included the Brad Pitt film "Killing Them Softly" last year.

Megan Ellison shares her father's passion for buying choice real estate. She owns three adjoining properties in a pricey hilltop section of Hollywood, including one from which she runs her company.

The producer was raised in Woodside, California, where her mother, Barbara, bred horses at her Wild Turkey Farm. David flew airplanes. Megan competed in equestrian-jumping competitions.

"She could have been a champion, she was that talented. And she had the determination to succeed you don't often see in someone that young," recalls her coach, champion jumper Mandy Porter. "But one day, she decided she wanted to try something else."

Her next film, "Foxcatcher," stars Steve Carell as John du Pont, a member of the prominent du Pont family who was convicted in the 1966 shooting of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz on du Pont's 800-acre Pennsylvania estate.

New flu drug stops virus in its tracks

Friday, February 22, 2013

A new class of influenza drug has been shown effective against drug-resistant strains of the flu virus, according to a study led by University of British Columbia researchers.

Published online today in the journal Science Express, the study details the development of a new drug candidate that prevents the flu virus from spreading from one cell to the next. The drug is shown to successfully treat mice with lethal strains of the flu virus.

In order to spread in the body, the flu virus first uses a protein, called hemagglutinin, to bind to the healthy cell's receptors. Once it has inserted its RNA and replicated, the virus uses an enzyme, called neuraminidase, to sever the connection and move on to the next healthy cell.

"Our drug agent uses the same approach as current flu treatments ? by preventing neuraminidase from cutting its ties with the infected cell," says UBC Chemistry Prof. Steve Withers, the study's senior author. "But our agent latches onto this enzyme like a broken key, stuck in a lock, rendering it useless."

The World Health Organization estimates that influenza affects three to five million people globally each year, causing 250,000 to 500,000 deaths. In some pandemic years, the figure rose to millions.

"One of the major challenges of the current flu treatments is that new strains of the flu virus are becoming resistant, leaving us vulnerable to the next pandemic," says Withers, whose team includes researchers from Canada, the UK, and Australia.

"By taking advantage of the virus's own 'molecular machinery' to attach itself," Withers adds. "The new drug could remain effective longer, since resistant virus strains cannot arise without destroying their own mechanism for infection."

All Critics (58) | Top Critics (16) | Fresh (52) | Rotten (6)

Nominated by the Academy as the year's best foreign-language film, No grabs you hard, no mercy, and keeps you riveted.

Larra?n's unarguable point is that, in politics, if we wait for good to issue only from the pure in heart, we will be waiting a very long time.

[Lorrain has] made a few daring choices here, not all of which work.

A troubling, exhilarating and ingeniously realized film that's part stirring political drama and part devilish media satire ...

For anyone fascinated by the political process and the powers of persuasive advertising, No is a resounding yes.

It hangs on three ideas...While each...is intriguing, the execution of all is less than satisfying.

Larra?n's script is punctuated by dark bursts of humour, and the filmmaker knowingly navigates his audience to a nail-biting - though never cloying, and fully warranted - climax.

It makes the superficial Mad Men seem like, well, a commercial. Buy, buy, buy.

A fascinating period re-creation if not an especially compelling drama.

Evocative and suspenseful, the film is a fascinating glimpse into recent history and the democratic process.

The film highlights the sad fact that logical arguments don't win political debates or elections. Sloganeering and advertising do.

Using a technique borrowed from cinema verit? documentaries, the director succeeds in making us feel as if we're living each moment right alongside his politically-charged characters.

It's a perfectly fine movie, but given its fairly radical storyline, the filmmaking tends to hew toward the safe and the familiar.

"No" gives a fresh look at the little known history of a country whose duly elected government under Salvador Allende was overthrown in a military coup led by Pinochet in 1973.

Savvy, often brilliant ...

Bernal plays the creative type perfectly. His big eyes always seem to be seeing things that others don't, and through his calm, methodical demeanor, you can sense the wheels turning in his head.

Stocks rally to close near session highs

Stocks finished near session highs Friday, recovering from a two-day slump, lifted by upbeat economic data from Europe and after comments from St. Louis Fed President James Bullard that the central bank's aggressive easy money policy will stay for a "long time."

The Dow eked out a slim weekly gain, avoiding its third-consecutive weekly decline. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 posted its first weekly loss this year, snapping its seven-week win streak.

"We're seeing some signs that the weekend anxiety is not that heavy," said Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services. "We have the Italian election coming up [this weekend] and a sign that I look at is the U.S. dollar?it was higher this morning on some anxiety and there was a bit of a flight to safety in Treasurys, but that's abating and that's telling me that [the market's] not too concerned about the weekend so that's why we're having a good rally."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied more than 100 points, led by Hewlett-Packard and Home Depot, while UnitedHealth dragged. Interestingly, the blue-chip index has so far posted a gain every Friday of this year, matching the Friday win streak from July through September of 2012.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also finished near session highs. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded below 15.

All key S&P sectors closed in positive territory, led by materials and techs.

Meanwhile, traders said leaked reports that Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has been downplaying worries that quantitative easing has spawned asset bubbles also helped lift markets.

Bernanke is scheduled to testify before lawmakers next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Earlier, St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said the Fed remained committed to aggressive easing measures in the form of its $85 billion a month bond-buying program.

"It's true that the committee is thinking about how are we going to handle this later this year, but that's a natural thing for the committee to be talking about," Bullard told CNBC's "Squawk Box." "Fed policy is very easy and it's going stay easy for a long time."

Uncertainty about the future of the central bank's bond buying program weighed on the stock market in the last two days.

Minutes from the Fed's meeting in January, released on Wednesday, showed policymakers were growing concerned about the impact of quantitative easing, suggesting the central bank may taper off its $85 billion per month purchasesearlier than expected.

Among earnings, Abercrombie & Fitch posted earnings that easily beat expectations, while revenue fell slightly short of estimates and the company handed in full-year 2013 earnings guidance that missed expectations. Meanwhile, the firm increased its quarterly dividend to 20 cents a share from 17.5 cents a share. Shares tumbled to lead the S&P 500 laggards.

Hewlett-Packard soared to lead the S&P 500 gainers after the computer hardware giant easily topped Wall Street expectations and handed in current-quarter and full-year earnings guidance that topped forecasts. At least three brokerages lifted their price target on the company.

Texas Instruments jumped to lead the Nasdaq 100 gainers after the chipmaker raised its dividend by 33 percent and boosted its stock buyback program.

Darden warned it expects to see third-quarter earnings of between $1 a share and $1.02 a share, against current Wall Street expectations for $1.12 a share, hurt by economic headwinds, including rising gas prices and higher payroll taxes.

European shares ended broadly higherfollowing positive economic news from Germany and ahead of Italy's general election this weekend.

German business sentiment jumped at its fastest rate since July 2010 in February, suggesting the country is rebounding after its weak fourth quarter.

Tracking Europe's alien invasion

Invasive alien species pose a greater risk to Europe's biodiversity, economy and human health than previously thought, a report has concluded.

The European Environment Agency (EEA) has compiled a list of 28 invaders that highlight the range of threats facing ecosystems in the continent.

Non-native species, such as food crops, can also be beneficial, the study adds.

The reports have been published ahead of a high-level meeting at the European Parliament to discuss the issue.

It is estimated that there are more than 10,000 non-native species in Europe, of which at least 15% are deemed to be "invasive", which are organisms that are known to have negative ecological or economic impacts.

Invasive alien species (IAS) are considered to be one of the main threats to biodiversity, explains EEA executive director Prof Jacqueline McGlade.

"In many areas, ecosystems are weakened by pollution, climate change and [habitat] fragmentation," she says.

"Alien species invasions are a growing pressure on the natural world, which are extremely difficult to reverse."

'Major threat'

The report, The Impact of Invasive Alien Species in Europe, lists the various impacts.

"Competition, predation and transmission of diseases between alien and native species are frequent and can pose a major threat to native species," the authors observe.

"Alien species may also affect ecosystem services, which in turn can have an impact on human well-being."

One species whose spread and impact has been well documented is Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica).

It can reach four metres in height, growing up to 30cm in a day. Its powerful root system can reach depths of three metres into the soil and spread up to 20 metres, making it almost impossible to eradicate once it becomes established.

The report says the plant forms dense stands and squeezes out other plant species and outcompetes native plants, resulting in a botanical "monoculture".

The publication adds: "The rhizome system of knotweeds can seriously damage infrastructure, such as buildings, river bank stabilisations and water channels, railway tracks and roads, and construction land.

"By disrupting the integrity of flood defence structures, the risk of flooding is increased."

An IAS that poses a direct threat to human health is the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which has been linked to the transmission of more than 20 human pathogens, including yellow fever and dengue.

The species is an "aggressive daytime?biting insect" and its distribution has spread rapidly in western and southern Europe over the past two decades.

On Thursday, Czech MEP Pavel Poc is hosting an event at the European Parliament in Brussels that will look at ways to tackle the threat posed by IAS.

Organised by conservation groups IUCN and Birdlife, the high-level debate at the European Parliament in Brussels will consider measures that could be taken within the EU policy framework to mitigate the present and future threats from invasive alien species.

The EEA report warns that the increasing growth of good and people around the globe could see the "number and impact of harmful IAS in Europe may grow significantly in the future".

It adds that changes to the climate may provide opportunities for IAS to proliferate and spread.

"In this situation, some IAS might initiate complex, unpredictable cascades of effects," it warns.

The EEA suggests that the best way to tackle the threats posed by invasive species was through a "combination of preventative measures, early detection and rapid response to incursions, with permanent management only as the last option".

How To Grow Your Home Business On A Budget | Content for Reprint

Author: Robert Strong | Total views: 157 Comments: 0
Word Count: 873 Date:

With the growing powers and capabilities of the internet and smart phones, businesses are less and less needing to be centered in an office setting. Many businesses now are operated from home. This can be advantageous in so many ways. This article will offer some tips about being a home businesses operator.

Running your home based business is a challenge, it is important to reward yourself so you will stay motivated. For instance, for every work related task that you complete from your list, you could reward yourself with fifteen minutes of non work activities. This will help to keep you focused and motivated.

Ensure that your home business is properly insured, by discussing the business with an insurance agent. You should also make sure that your home business complies with local zoning laws and city ordinances. You don't want to start a dog care business, if there is a limit to the amount of animals you can have on your property.

Keep an attitude that will bring you success in your home business venture. If you go about your day thinking of your home business as a hobby, you are not going to see the success that you would if you really considered it to be your real job. Keep a business attitude even when your business is in your home.

It is wise to engage the services of a professional accountant early in your home business career. Even the simplest home business owner is in a far more complex tax situation than a salaried employee. A tax expert can ensure that you avoid any pitfalls awaiting you in home business ownership, and make sure you meet all of your tax obligations.

Use a spreadsheet to keep track of your business activity. You can enter mileage, purchases, income and other business related transactions all in one spreadsheet using different columns. Use formulas to run totals on the columns and tax time will not seem quite so threatening.

One way you can keep your home business on track is to set fixed hours for working on it. Running a business out of your home can tempt you to put off your work or prioritize other interests ahead of it. By committing to a relatively inflexible schedule, you can encourage yourself to treat your business professionally.

In order to make your home business successful, make your website attractive. The number one thing a person notices when they click on a website is its design. If the website is too flashy or too plain, it may turn customers off. If you are unsure how to design your website, there are many tools online.

Keep everything you commonly use on your desk or at your workbench within easy reach. That may seem like an obvious tip but if you always have to over extend or even get up from your work area to get something you need then your aren't organizing your area efficiently. Organize according to need.

In order to make a home business successful, your business must be found in the Google search results. Search engine optimization is key in succeeding in today's business world. Many different companies offer tools for search engine optimization, and it is imperative that you employ a few different strategies in order to obtain success.

Leveraging social media for your home business is an absolute must! Both brick-and-mortar stores as well as online-only companies will find that it not only expands your reach but also creates a conversation with your customers. People love it when a company replies to their questions or comments on Twitter or Facebook!

Get your friends and family to promote your home business for you. Give them business cards so they can hand them out to the people they know who might want to use your services. You can even make it a fun game by putting a coupon code on the card which is specific to the individual you give it to, and then the person with the most referrals wins a prize!

Keep your equipment up to date. If you buy equipment that you obviously need for your business, such as office supplies or a computer, you can deduct your expenses from your taxes. To avoid getting in trouble, do not write off expenses that might fit into what you bought for your home rather than your business.

To reduce distractions keep your office off limits to children. Have set work hours that enable you to run your business and still have time for your family. Older children should understand not to disturb you while you are working. For your business to succeed your family needs to be supportive and respectful of your work schedule.

It is extremely important to set up specific space and time to work. When you are interrupted, you must maintain those work-at- home boundaries. With small children, child care is required as if you were not home. As the owner, you don't have any benefits. Sick days, vacations, and paid holidays are a thing of the past.

Report: Jerry Buss hospitalized with cancer

(AP) ? Lakers owner Jerry Buss has been hospitalized with cancer, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

The 79-year-old Buss has spent time in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to the Times, which quoted Buss' son, Jim, Thursday saying his father was "doing fine." Several current and former Lakers players, including Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson, have visited Buss.

Team spokesman John Black said the team has no plans to comment on Buss' health out of respect for the family's wishes. Buss spokesman Bob Steiner said information would have to come from the Lakers.

"Dr. Jerry Buss, thinking about u & wish I could be there, get well soon," former Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal tweeted Thursday. "I cant wait 2 see u on 4/2/13 (hash)LoveYou."

The Lakers will retire O'Neal's No. 34 jersey on April 2.

Buss has been hospitalized several times in recent years, including a stint last July for dehydration. He was treated for blood clots in his legs in December 2011.

A former aerospace engineer and real-estate developer, Buss has been a prominent name in American sports since he bought the Lakers, the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and the Forum from Jack Kent Cooke in 1979. Buss immediately transformed the Lakers into the NBA's most glamorous franchise, winning 10 NBA championships under his watch.

The Lakers won five titles in nine years during the 1980s, earning a reputation as basketball's most exciting team with their glamorous Showtime style led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Johnson, who was Buss' first draft pick. O'Neal and Kobe Bryant then led the Lakers to a threepeat from 2000-02 under coach Phil Jackson before Bryant and Pau Gasol won two more titles in 2009 and 2010.

Buss' children moved into leadership roles with the Lakers in recent years. Jim Buss, the Lakers' executive vice president of player personnel and the second of Buss' six children, has taken a leading role in basketball decisions, while daughter Jeanie plays a major role in running the franchise's business side.

Yet Jerry Buss was deeply involved the Lakers' most recent major moves, including the acquisitions of Steve Nash and Dwight Howard last summer, along with the firing of coach Mike Brown and the hiring of Mike D'Antoni early this season.

Clues to childhood respiratory virus: Human metapneumovirus

Feb. 13, 2013 ? New Vanderbilt-led research published in the Feb. 14 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine has identified the relatively unknown human metapneumovirus (MPV) as the second most common cause of severe bronchiolitis in young children.

Senior author John Williams, M.D., associate professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and a well-known expert in MPV research, said it is gratifying to offer a clearer picture of how this virus impacts children.

"We found MPV is as important a cause of respiratory illness as influenza, and caused more illness than the three common types of parainfluenza virus combined. In fact, in young children, the burden of MPV was second only to RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) as a cause of bronchiolitis," Williams said.

The prospective research spanned six years, from 2003 to 2009, and involved samples taken from more than 10,000 children under age 5. The children were hospitalized, treated in an emergency department, or seen in an outpatient clinic with a lower respiratory infection (bronchiolitis).

Lead author Kathryn Edwards, M.D., the Sarah H. Sell and Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair in Pediatrics and director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program, led the clinical portion of the study while Williams' laboratory tested the samples for their viral content.

Three New Vaccine Surveillance Network (NVSN) sites participated: Rochester, N.Y., Cincinnati and Nashville, making this the largest prospective trial to date to investigate the burden of MPV.

Researchers found MPV tends to affect more children over age 1 than RSV, and while both viral infections strike in late winter or spring, MPV has a seasonal peak that lags behind the typical peak for RSV by about a month. The authors said physicians commonly see patients with this virus, but know little about it.

"It is important to understand the burden of disease caused by human metapneumovirus so that we can work on vaccines to prevent them. We want to understand the enemy so that we can counteract it," said Edwards.

MPV was first described in 2001 and there are no specific treatments or vaccines for it other than supportive care for bronchiolitis, such as oxygen, bronchodilators and intravenous fluids. No children involved in this study died from their infections. Williams said this is generally true for all the major causes of bronchiolitis in the United States because of the level of medical care available in this country.

"But in developing nations worldwide, lower respiratory illness is a leading cause of death in young children. Only diarrhea kills more children under the age of 5. We can infer, because of this study, that MPV is a major contributor to these deaths worldwide. We hope this will help stimulate more interest in research on vaccines and treatment for MPV," Williams said.

The major funding for this work came from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with additional funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Other Vanderbilt authors include Marie Griffin, M.D., MPH, professor of Preventive Medicine and Yuwei Zhu, M.D., M.S., senior associate in Biostatistics.

Relationships: Dating For Boomers Article Category - Rock The Stage

To begin with of all, Paul Janka has gotten a great deal of assistance from the media with this book. He's been on Dr. Phil and The Nowadays Show and has developed a major buzz about the book. He talks about heading from getting a young virgin to a guy finding tons of women in bed. It was really distinctive from most of the stuff in the seduction local community. Paul requires an authentic point of view and arrives from his individual view stage. I'd say it's really worth checking out. I give it an eight out of 10.

Many men believe that Korean women are more affectionate rather than intimate. However, this is certainly not true because Korean women seek intimacy too. Korean women simply restricted to display or be vocal about their sexual desires or else she will be in big trouble. There are several hot Korean women that you can find in various Asian dating services that is why Western guys find them very attractive.

For a lot of bisexuals taking the initial step to acquire began with bisexual is one thing that could be a hassle to a lot of. They dream of it, but don't dare to anything about this for one reason or even the other.

Many women place a considerable amount of trust in their friends and as they grow up, they turn to these friends for recommendations, but once everyone is settled into connections it would be ridiculous to expect them to give you relevant information for your own situation.

No cost sites allow for a couple of pictures of members to produce their best efforts. Paid sites allow for up to 5 photos. This allows other members to getting a better feel of the sort of personality they need.

Let's get back to the mutual selection process. Now this could go two different ways. You choose them, they choose you. Ahhh...It's a match made in heaven and before you know it Mr. Wonderful runs off with you into the sunset where you have 2.5 children and a white picket fence. However, the other way this could unfold is slightly reminiscent to a high school popularity contest for class secretary that you lost to blonde haired, double D cup, cheerleader Heather Wilson. You quickly rush home, go online, and choose that special someone as your only interest; disregarding all other decent individuals you met because, well they just weren't as wonderful and you are convinced that this person is the one.

And if you're just not the outdoorsy type, consider an indoor activity like indoor golf. Enjoy a nice cup of coffee or pastry at a coffee shop. Stroll through the mall if you enjoy shopping- that way you can give him some "tips or suggestions," as I like to call them.

Women are arrogant about their self worth. A woman's support system is different from that of a man's. As women, it is natural for friends to tell them how good of a catch they are. Women support each other with positive rebuttals to whatever situation that may be going on; such as a break-up. In the end, women really believe that they are individually great; and that any man would be lucky to have them. Though this may be partly true, it's still not quite the reality of things, because even women make mistakes. There are women who cheat, lie, and even steal from their mates. However, if they were to write a list of qualities about themselves, I doubt that you would find any negative things; despite their bad habits.

Health Insurance Cost Escalating Fast | Stuff.co.nz

The cost of having health insurance is still rising faster than inflation, with private health premiums growing 5.3 per cent in 2012.

The silver lining for cash-strapped households was that health insurance payouts kept pace with the percentage rise in premiums, after a period when premiums rose much faster than payouts.

Industry body the Health Funds Association says health insurers paid $876 million in claims in the year to December 2012, up $44m on 2011.

In return, people paid premiums totalling $1.09 billion, up 5.2 per cent or $55 million from 2011.

In the year ending October, premium hikes outstripped the annual rise in payouts - rising 6.2 per cent to claims? 4.8 per cent - which the industry blamed on having to play catch-up with spiralling claims costs.

Association chief executive Roger Styles said actuaries had for years underestimated how much claims would cost. But recent forecasts had been more accurate.

??In the last 5-6 years they were consistently underestimating so I think you had premium catch-up where premiums had to rise ahead of claims inflation,?? he said.

He stressed he was not criticising actuaries, whom he said could not have been expected to predict such cost-hiking changes as the shift in ACC?s policy on elective surgery for ??wear and tear??.

The change pushed more claims into private insurers, he said.

New technology has helped contribute to soaring medical inflation in the past two decades.

Styles said the rise in the cost of medical treatment had slowed last year after going up on average by about nine per cent a year since 2005.

At the same time a recovering economy and growing uncertainty about public health cover helped stem the loss of health insurance customers, he said.

The number of people with health insurance dropped just 0.1 per cent for the December 2012 quarter, although it was down 0.8 per cent for the year.

When it comes to love, men are the biggest risk takers

Feb. 11, 2013 ? How far would you go to get the attention of the one you love? According to a recent study it seems that given a romantic opportunity, men are willing to take big risks in getting attention from the opposite sex, and what's more it's all down to evolution.

From Romeo to Robin Hood, Tristan to Tarzan, fiction is inundated with men who are willing to face a multitude of trials, troubles and tribulations when it comes to winning the affections of the one they love. But it appears that the act of taking risks to impress women has a strong foundation in real life, where the inclination to face dangers for the opposite sex has been prevalent since the dawn of man, and is still evident to this day.

Risk-taking behaviour has (in part) been evolved to enhance an individual's ability to attract a mate finds a recent study from the Journal of Risk Research:

According to the authors, "in the evolutionary past, our ancestors were faced with a hazardous environment where they were forced to take greater risks in order to find shelter, food and sexual partners. Thus, individuals who played it safe in that they did not take any risks at all, were unlikely to survive."

So, it appears that men have inherited this willingness to face dangers for women from our risk-friendly ancestors. However, in a modern age where these previous problems are all but extinct, men increasingly look to other forms to showcase their willingness to take risks.

The study looks at three examples of risk taking behaviour in men and women: sexual risk taking (i.e. unprotected sex), gambling and reckless driving. In all three tests, men were seen to show a greater inclination to take the inherent risks involved once a romantic element has been induced. Women however showed no increased desire to take unnecessary risks.

Of course, note that authors, whilst these activities may have perceived benefits in the short term, the long-term effect of these modern day risks are potentially devastating, something that male readers may want to consider in the run-up to Valentine's Day!

(AP) ? Chinese New Year is traditionally a time for colorful and noisy displays of fireworks and generous-portioned banquets. This year, the festivities are likely to be a little more austere.

Authorities have asked the public to set off fewer fireworks in Beijing to reduce pollution, a new anti-extravagance drive has prompted government officials and state-owned companies to cancel their banquets at high-end hotels and a campaign against food waste is leading to half-portions in restaurants. Even ads for luxury goods were pulled ahead of Saturday's opening of the seven-day holiday.

All in all, China's Lunar New Year is shaping up to be a Leaner New Year.

Following a call by China's new leader Xi Jinping to oppose waste, a village just outside of Beijing has canceled its mass dumpling festival that has been taking place for the past 30 years, involves hundreds of people and draws television cameras.

"We planned to make about 50,000 dumplings and now the plan has been canceled," said a woman surnamed Wang from the Liuminying village committee's tourist office. "The flour bought for the festival will be distributed to the villagers and we haven't bought the meat yet. Villagers will make dumplings at home with their own families and they may feel like this is a new experience for them since they haven't done it that way for such a long time."

Xi recently called for people to be more frugal and oppose waste following a "Clear the Plate" campaign by netizens calling on restaurants to cut down food waste. His words sparked off an anti-food waste campaign in state media.

He had already launched a crackdown against government extravagance, aimed at cutting corruption by officials, which angers the general public and threatens the party's hold on power.

Capsulizing the new mood, the website of the Global Times newspaper on Wednesday displayed a photo of workers at a power supply company in eastern Anhui province writing "cut down waste" slogans on balloons.

The Beijing city government together with catering associations announced that the restaurant industry should reduce food waste. Ten companies with a total of 749 branches have responded with a plan to offer half-portions and encourage people to take away their leftovers, according to the Beijing News.

A lot of people are already asking for the half portions, said a waitress at Xiabu Xiabu, one of the named chains, in a central Beijing office block.

Bearing the brunt of Xi's austerity drive, government officials and state-owned companies are stopping their banquets this year, and luxury hotels are missing out on the business.

A lot of reservations are being cancelled, many of which were for government departments and state-owned companies, said a woman surnamed Zheng at the dining department of the Zhejiang Hotel in eastern Hangzhou city.

Hu Xiaonan, 24, who works for a PR company, said having banquets over the New Year holiday is a must, but people should wrap up the leftovers. "Most people are worried about losing face" ? if they take the leftovers home people will think they are too concerned about money, Hu said.

Highlighting the dangers of over-indulging, the general manager of a state-owned financial investment company in southern Guangdong province has been suspended following a banquet in which he and 16 others ran up a bill worth 37,517 yuan ($5,965), according to the Zhuhai city Communist Party. They drank 12 bottles of expensive wine and Zhou Shaoqiang tried to hide the extravagance by having the restaurant make out a receipt for about a tenth of the price.

In another response to the calls for people to shun extravagance and waste, China's TV watchdog has ordered all radio and television channels to cut advertising suggesting "gift giving," the official Xinhua News Agency reported this week. A circular issued by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television says some ads have encouraged people to give luxury watches, rare stamps and gold coins, "which has publicized incorrect values and helped create a bad social ethos," Xinhua said. This also has to do with corruption, because it's less obvious than giving money. These goods are easily tradable, so someone seeking a favor from an official can give him or her an expensive watch and the official can then easily sell it.

While fireworks are a major part of the festivities surrounding the Lunar New Year, which marks the beginning of the Year of the Snake, authorities in Beijing are asking the public to curb firework celebrations so as not to add to the city's worsening air pollution, Xinhua reported Tuesday.

Beijing's air has been a hot topic over the past month because of especially bad bouts of pollution turning the city into a gray landscape. The poor visibility affected flights, disrupting travel home ahead of the celebrations, the biggest family reunion of the year.

"That day when we saw the pollution, my son said let's not do fireworks this year in Beijing," said Wang Yufeng, a 36-year-old teacher.

Hu, who works in PR, doesn't think the Lunar New Year will be any less enjoyable this year because of the campaigns to reduce waste and fireworks.

"It is for us, for the environment and our future generations," she said.

The Legal Case for Israel - Le?gal In?sur?rec?tion

We have focused frequently on the lawfare strategy against Israel, advocated by people like Hastings College of Law Professor George Bisharat, which has been a primary focus of Palestinian political strategy ever since Israel put a halt to suicide bombings by building the security barrier.

Lawfare against Israel, however, is based on politics, not law, and is an attempt to delegitimize Israel since they can?t blow it up.

One of the best explanations of the legal and political background is presented in this video by Northwestern Law Professor Eugene Kontorovich.? He puts the lie to the currently fashionable notion that the ?1967 borders? have any legal or historical signficance, and demonstrates that Israel does not ?illegally occupy? the West Bank.? In fact, it was Jordan which illegally occupied the West Bank prior to 1967.
