RG3 leads last-minute drive to beat Bucs 24-22

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Billy Cundiff redeemed himself for a poor day kicking, booting a 41-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining to give the Washington Redskins a 24-22 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Cundiff missed three earlier attempts, including a 31-yarder that wound have put the Redskins (2-2) up by two scores early in the fourth quarter. He also missed twice in the first half, but was on the money after Robert Griffin III marched his team into position for the winning score.

Tampa Bay (1-3) wiped out an 18-point deficit to go ahead 22-21 on Connor Barth's third field goal, a 47-yarder with 1:42 remaining.

But Griffin wasn't finished. He completed three straight passes to move the Redskins from their own 20 to the 41, then ran for 15 yards to the 26. Two plays, Cundiff kicked the winner.

Another big Supreme Court term kicks off Monday

(AP) ? When last we saw the chief justice of the United States on the bench, John Roberts was joining with the Supreme Court's liberals in an unlikely lineup that upheld President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Progressives applauded Roberts' statesmanship. Conservatives uttered cries of betrayal.

Now, the Supreme Court is embarking on a new term beginning Monday that could be as consequential as the last one, with the prospect for major rulings about affirmative action, gay marriage and voting rights.

Many people on both the left and right expect Roberts to return to the fold and side with the conservative justices in the new term's big cases. If they're right, the spotlight will be back on Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose vote typically is decisive in cases that otherwise split the court's liberals and conservatives.

But Roberts will be watched closely, following his health care vote, for fresh signs that he's becoming less ideologically predictable.

It may be that the dramatic health care decision presages "some shift in his tenure as chief justice," said Steve Shapiro, the American Civil Liberties Union's national legal director. "Or does it give him cover to continue to pursue a conservative agenda?"

The first piece of evidence could be in the court's consideration of the University of Texas' already limited use of race to help fill its incoming freshman classes, which comes before the court Oct. 10. The outcome could further limit or even end the use of racial preferences in college admissions.

Roberts has expressed contempt for the use of race in drawing legislative districts, calling it "a sordid business, this divvying us up by race," and in assigning students to public schools, saying that "the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race."

The written arguments submitted by both sides in the Texas case leave little doubt that Kennedy, not Roberts, holds the prized vote. The challengers of the Texas program and the university itself cite Kennedy's prior writings on affirmative action a combined 50 times.

The court also is expected to confront gay marriage in some form. Several cases seek to guarantee federal benefits for legally married same-sex couples. A provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act deprives same-sex couples of a range of federal benefits available to heterosexual couples.

Several federal courts have agreed that the provision of the law is unconstitutional, a situation that practically ensures that the high court will step in.

A separate appeal asks the justices to sustain California's Proposition 8, the amendment to the state constitution that outlawed gay marriage in the nation's largest state. Federal courts in California have struck down the amendment.

Once again, many legal analysts expect Roberts essentially to be against gay marriage. "The outcome clearly turns on how Anthony Kennedy votes," said Georgetown University law professor Michael Seidman.

The justices may not even consider whether to hear the gay marriage issue until November.

Another hot topic with appeals pending before the high court, and more soon to follow, is the future of a cornerstone law of the civil rights movement.

In 2006, Congress overwhelmingly approved, and President George W. Bush signed, legislation extending for 25 more years a critical piece of the Voting Rights Act. It requires states and local governments with a history of racial and ethnic discrimination, mainly in the South, to get advance approval either from the Justice Department or the federal court in Washington before making any changes that affect elections.

The requirement currently applies to the states of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. It also covers certain counties in California, Florida, New York, North Carolina and South Dakota, and some local jurisdictions in Michigan and New Hampshire. Coverage has been triggered by past discrimination not only against blacks, but also against American Indians, Asian-Americans, Alaskan Natives and Hispanics.

The court spoke skeptically about the provision in a 2009 decision, but left it mostly unchanged. Now, however, cases from Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas could prompt the court to deal head on with the issue of advance approval. The South Carolina and Texas cases involve voter identification laws; a similar Indiana law was previously upheld by the court.

It is unclear when the justices will decide whether to hear arguments in those cases. Arguments themselves would not take place until next year.

Yet there still is a chance that the court could become enmeshed in election disputes, even before the ballots are counted. Suits in Ohio over early voting and provisional ballots appear the most likely to find their way to the justices before the Nov. 6 election, said Richard Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California at Irvine law school.

Among other important cases already on the court's docket:

? A high-stakes dispute, to be argued first thing Monday, between the business community and human rights advocates over the reach of a 1789 law. The issue is whether businesses can be sued in U.S. courts for human rights violations that take place on foreign soil and have foreign victims.

? A challenge to the use of drug-sniffing dogs in two situations. Florida police used a marijuana-sniffing dog's alert at the door of a private home to obtain a search warrant to look inside the house. The question is whether the dog's sniff itself was a search. A separate case looks at the reliability of animals trained to pick up the scent of illegal drugs.

? A challenge to the detention of a man who police picked up a mile away from an apartment they had a warrant to search. Occupants of a home may be detained during the search for the safety of officers, but this case tests how far that authority extends away from the place to be searched.

? Environmental disputes involving runoff from logging roads in Oregon and water pollution in Los Angeles.

Paul Clement, the Republican lawyer who lost the health care case and could again be before the justices on gay marriage and voting rights, said last term punctured the notion that in close cases, the court goes where Kennedy wants.

"We've all been reminded that's not always the case," he said.

The idea that could be tested this term is whether Roberts' concern for the court as an institution that is apart from politics will influence his votes, or at least his reasoning, in the year's biggest cases.

Ancient stinging nettles reveal Bronze Age trade connections

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? A piece of nettle cloth retrieved from Denmark's richest known Bronze Age burial mound Luseh?j may actually derive from Austria, new findings suggest. The cloth thus tells a surprising story about long-distance Bronze Age trade connections around 800 BC.

2,800 years ago, one of Denmark's richest and most powerful men died. His body was burned. And the bereaved wrapped his bones in a cloth made from stinging nettle and put them in a stately bronze container, which also functioned as urn.

Now new findings suggest that the man's voyage to his final resting place may have been longer than such voyages usually were during the Bronze Age: the nettle cloth, which was wrapped around the deceased's bones, was not made in Denmark, and the evidence points to present-day Austria as the place of origin.

"I expected the nettles to have grown in Danish soil on the island of Funen, but when I analysed the plant fibres' strontium isotope levels, I could see that this was not the case," explains postdoc Karin Margarita Frei from the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre for Textile Research at the University of Copenhagen.

"The levels indicate that the nettles grew in an area with geologically old bedrock. We can only find rock with similar levels of strontium isotope in Sweden and Norway as well as in Central Europe."

Karin Margarita Frei had to conclude that Bronze Age Danes did not use local stinging nettle for their nettle textiles.

Strontium tells us where we come from

It is Karin Margarita Frei who has developed the method to determine plant textiles' strontium isotope levels that has led to the surprising discovery.

Strontium is an element which exists in Earth's crust, but its prevalence is subject to geological and topographical variation. Humans, animals, and plants absorb strontium through water and food. By measuring the strontium level in archaeological remains, researchers can determine where humans and animals lived, and where plants grew.

The new discovery is the result of a collaboration between an international team of researchers from the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre for Textile Research at the University of Copenhagen, the University of Bergen in Norway, and the National Museum of Denmark. The findings are described in an article that has just been published in Nature's online journal Scientific Reports.

Made in Austria

Karin Margarita Frei's work and the grave's archaeological remains suggest that the cloth may have been produced as far away as the Alps.

A bronze container, which had been used as urn, is of Central European origin and probably from the K?rnten-Steiermark region in Austria. The strontium isotope analysis of the cloth indicates that it may very well be from the same region. This assumption is supported by yet incomplete analyses of pitch found in the Luseh?j grave.

Textile archaeologist Ulla Mannering from the National Museum of Denmark offers an explanation as to how an Austrian cloth ended up in Funen, Denmark.

"Bronze Age Danes got their bronze from Central Europe, and imports were controlled by rich and powerful men. We can imagine how a bronze importer from Funen in Denmark died on a business trip to Austria. His bones were wrapped in an Austrian nettle cloth and placed in a stately urn that his travel companions transported back to Denmark," Ulla Mannering suggests.

Nettles made good textile

The strontium isotope analyses have surprised Ulla Mannering.

She concludes on the basis of the analyses that Central Europeans still used wild plants for textile production during the Bronze Age while at the same time cultivating textile plants such as flax on a large scale. Nettle textiles could apparently compete with textiles made from flax and other materials because top quality nettle fabrics are as good as raw silk.

The strontium isotope analyses also mean that Danish textile history needs revision.

"Until recently the Luseh?j nettle cloth was the oldest nettle cloth we knew, and the only Bronze Age nettle cloth, but with our new findings we actually have no evidence that nettle textiles were produced in Denmark at all during the Bronze Age," Ulla Mannering points out.

Cracking The Nut With Jam, SAP Moves Social Tools Out Of The Silo And Into Business Apps

SAP-LogoSAP is rebuilding its social tools with a service called Jam that it will launch in November. It will combine social networking, real-time updates, and the ability to build apps that are "purpose built" for people who need to communicate with people inside and outside the corporate walls. Instead of Jam's collaboration tools existing in a silo, SAP is instead focusing on integrating them into a suite of business apps through what it calls "social glue" designed to bind social networking with its CRM, HCM, Finance, and other apps.

Vatican: 'Jesus' Wife' papyrus is a fake

An ancient papyrus fragment which a Harvard scholar says contains the first recorded mention that Jesus may have had a wife is a fake, the Vatican said Friday.

"Substantial reasons would lead one to conclude that the papyrus is indeed a clumsy forgery," the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, said in an editorial by its editor, Gian Maria Vian. "In any case, it's a fake."

Joining a highly charged academic debate over the authenticity of the text, written in ancient Egyptian Coptic, the newspaper published a lengthy analysis by expert Alberto Camplani of Rome's La Sapienza university, outlining doubts about the manuscript and urging extreme caution.

The fragment, which reads "Jesus said to them, 'My wife...'" was unveiled by Harvard Professor Karen King as a text from the 4th century at a congress of Coptic Studies in Rome last week.

Her study divided the academic community, with some hailing it as a landmark discovery while others rapidly expressed their doubts

"It's really pretty unlikely that it's authentic," University of Durham Professor Francis Watson told Reuters after he published a paper arguing the words on the fragment were a rearrangement of phrases from a well known Coptic text.

Watson, who has previously worked on identifying forged gospels, said it was likely to be an ancient blank fragment that was written over in the 20th or 21st century by a forger seeking to make money.

Watson argues that the words on the fragment do not fit grammatically into a larger text.

"It's possible to get hold of an old bit of unwritten-on papyrus and write some new stuff on it," Watson said. "There is a market for fake antiquities throughout the Middle East ... I would guess that in this case the motivation might have been a financial one."

Academic debate
Manuscript experts who heard King's presentation quickly took to their blogs to express doubts, noting that the letters were clumsy, perhaps the script of someone unused to writing Coptic.

Writing from the conference, early Christian scholar Christian Askeland said specialists there were divided between two-thirds who were extremely skeptical, and one-third convinced the fragment was false.

"I have not met anyone who supports its authenticity," Askeland wrote from a session of the Tenth International Congress of Coptic Studies, where King gave her paper.

In an email to Reuters after the conference ended and before the Vatican editorial, King said: "Whether, in the end, the fragment will be shown to be authentic is still to be finally determined, but the serious conversation among scholars has begun."

During the conference King stressed that the fragment did not give "any evidence that Jesus was married, or not married" but that early Christians were talking about the possibility.

AnneMarie Luijendijk, associate professor of religion at Princeton University, said she concluded that the fragment was indeed an authentic, ancient text, written by a scribe in antiquity.

"We can see that by the way the ink is preserved on the papyrus and also the way the papyrus has faded and also the way the papyrus has become very fragmentary, which is actually in line with a lot of other papyri we have also from the New Testament," Luijendijk told Reuters during the conference.

The idea that Jesus was married resurfaces regularly in popular culture, notably with the 2003 publication of Dan Brown's best-seller "The Da Vinci Code," which angered the Vatican because, among other things, it was based on the idea that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and had children.

Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was not married and the Catholic Church, by far the largest in Christendom, says women cannot become priests because Christ chose only men as his apostles.

New Edition of Definitive (Two-Volume) Resource in Stem Cells Released Today ?Handbook of Stem Cells? 2nd Edition Co-edited by ? Robert Lanza, M.D., ACT?s Chief Scientific Officer?????? 09/28 08:30 AM

?

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.?(BUSINESS WIRE)? Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. (ACTC:$0.0765,$-0.0004,-0.52%) , a leader in the field of regenerative medicine, announced today that its chief scientific officer, Robert Lanza, M.D. and Anthony Atala, M.D., W.H. Boyce Professor and Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, have released the second edition of Handbook of Stem Cells(Academic Press/Elsevier), the widely-recognized definitive resource in the field of stem cells. It includes a Forward by Professor Sir Martin Evans, Ph.D., FRS, co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2007. Sir Martin is credited with discovering embryonic stem cells and is considered one of the chief architects of the field of stem cell research. The two-volume set also includes contributions from dozens of stem cell pioneers, including James Thomson, Shinya Yamanaka, Doug Melton, Janet Rossant, and Robert Langer (a member of ACT?s board of directors), among others, as well as patient advocate Mary Tyler Moore. Handbook of Stem Cells, Second Edition follows a very successful edition published in 2004. The first edition was the first comprehensive body of work dedicated entirely to the stem cell field. The two-volume set quickly became the most relevant textbook in the stem cell arena. Now, several years later, major advances have occurred, with entirely new classes of stem cells being described. The description of induced pluripotent cells in the last few years brought many more avenues of research and discovery. In 2012, the first paper reporting results of two patients treated with human embryonic stem cells was published by ACT and its collaborators. It might seem that we have waited too long to finally see pluripotent stem cells in the clinic. However, this has been accomplished with incredible speed when it is considered that hESCs were first isolated just 14 years ago. Handbook of Stem Cells integrates this exciting area, combining in two volumes the requisites for a general understanding of both adult and embryonic stem cells. Organized in two volumes, Pluripotent Stem Cells and Adult & Fetal Stem Cells, this work contains contributions from the world?s experts in stem cell research to provide a description of the tools, methods, and experimental protocols needed to study and characterize stem cells and progenitor populations as well as a the latest information of what is known about each specific organ system. ?The Handbook of Stem Cells, edited by Robert Lanza and colleagues, is an ambitious new text that achieves extraordinary completeness and inclusiveness,? wrote Steve Goldman of University of Rochester Medical Center in NATURE CELL BIOLOGY about the first edition. ?[...] the editors have succeeded in putting together a reference that is broad enough in scope, but sufficiently detailed and rigorous, to be of real interest to both new and seasoned investigators in the field [...] In providing this treatise, which covers the history, biology, methods and applications of stem cells, the editors and authors have succeeded in establishing a conceptual framework and a common language for the field. In so doing, they have ensured that this two-volume set will serve as a benchmark reference in stem cell biology for years to come.? Writing about the first edition in the Times Higher Education Supplement, Ian Wilmut added, ?These books make an invaluable contribution to the education of researchers and clinicians both of the present day and of the future. They should be available in libraries of all biology and medical schools as well as those of companies and research institutions.? About Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. Community Festival 're-launches' Tottenham's largest ... - Lordship Rec

8,000 residents attend to celebrate the community-led regeneration of Tottenham?s largest park, and to showcase the talents and interests of Tottenham?s communities

The 2012 Lordship Rec ?Re-launch? Community Festival in Tottenham on Saturday 22nd September was a huge success. 8,000 attended the celebration of the new community-led regeneration works in the Recreation Ground, and took part in a dazzling array of free activities for all ages and interests. From 11am to 5pm thousands joined in the sports, arts and crafts, music and dance, history, discussions, browsing of stalls, and other fun and educational activities. As in the previous annual festivals in the Rec, the idea was to showcase the talents and interests of Tottenham?s communities and to promote community spirit. Over 70 local volunteers helped the day go smoothly.

The event was organised and co-ordinated by the Lordship Rec Users Forum**, the community-led stakeholders organisation who have driven forward the successful regeneration of the park over the last 10 years. ?5m of construction works over the last 18 mths (?4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund) have resulted in a gorgeous brand-new flower-lined channel for the River Moselle, a new ?Loop? bike track and an Environmental Hub building with caf? and classroom, refurbishment of the Shell Theatre, restoration of the historic and nationally-unique Model Traffic Area, new meadows, flower-beds and tree planting, and general improvements to drainage, paths and entrances. The festival was able to introduce all these new features and facilities to local residents.

Activities at the festival included the Tottenham Flower & Produce Show; Dog Show; Cycling Extravaganza (including Trax skills, Dr Bike, Peace Bike Ride, specialist mobility bikes and Fun Bikes); Green Zone; City Farm Animals and Horse Rides; Athletics pop-up track and a Fun Run; Community Games; Fitness and Gym equipment; Puppet Shows; Performances of Music and Dance (including Dance Stage, Buskers Corner and Shell Theatre stage with bands and choirs); a Community Caf? and a Cream Teas tent; Football Tournaments and various other indoor and outdoor Sports (eg Netball, Tennis, Sanjuro, Table tennis and Badminton); Arts and Crafts for Under-5s and for older children; Bouncy Castle; History Zone; Lakeside pond-dipping; Adventure Play; 64 Community Stalls (including information, bric-a-brac, cakes and face-painting); Art Gallery; Housing Rights discussion; Wildlife and Gardening Walks and Talks; Environmental Hub Open House tours; and a huge Hot Air Balloon. And of course many people organised their own picnics all over the park.

?? The wealth of local talent, energy and community spirit on show at our annual festival was matched by the excellent new facilities and features in our rejuvenated park. The people of Tottenham deserve the best possible local public services and opportunities and this 10-year community-led regeneration project has demonstrated what can be achieved when residents? own visions for the future are backed by the resources and political will we need. We look forward to this community empowerment continuing over the next 10 years as we help to manage the park in partnership with the Council. ? -? Dave Morris, Chair of the Lordship Rec Users Forum

** The Lordship Rec Users Forum is made up of the Friends of Lordship Rec, the Back To Earth local charity, other users groups of the park, local Residents Associations, Haringey Council?s Leisure Services, and many other local organisations.

Important Information To Know Before Making A Real Estate ...

Purchasing real estate is extremely frightening for anyone, but it definitely is for those who have never done it. But, it can make a great investment, and when you choose the right property, you can enjoy a better quality of life right away. This article is filled with great real estate buying tips and advice.

When considering a home, do not forget to research the entire neighborhood the home is in. If the neighborhood isn?t any good, then you will be miserable, even if the property itself is fine. You must be aware of your surroundings so that you know what possible issues could arise.

When you are looking into real estate, understand that this could be your home for a long time. If you are planning on having kids, make sure that you purchase a home that has a good school nearby.

TIP! Do not let the price of a house you are interested in be influenced by the fact it has a view. The view might not be something that is worth it for the next buyer.

Try to contact your former clients around the holidays and during anniversaries of their purchases. Additional contact from you will help them remember how valuable your services were during their real estate experience. After you finish speaking with them, let them know that you would appreciate it if they felt comfortable referring you to their family members and friends.

When searching the property market for potential purchases, you need to be both realistic and patient. It can take some time to find the perfect property that will help you meet your goals and work with your business strategy.

Before buying a home, get an inspector to examine it. You don?t want to uncover any major problems after you have signed the purchase contract. Not only will this cost a lot, you might need to change your living situation until it?s fixed.

TIP! A buyer?s checklist will help you understand the real estate buying process, and these forms can be acquired from your Realtor. Many Realtors will have a checklist that will cover every aspect of buying a home; from finding the right house that is in your budget to finalizing the mortgage.

With current markets, now is a great time to purchase real estate. Property values are lower than ever, meaning some great deals can be found. If you are financially secure, seize your chance to get a great piece of property at a low price. Eventually, the market will rise again over time, making your investment profitable.

Before you sign your lease agreement, ask the landlord about who is going to take care of the garden. You should know that in some cases, a renter is expected to take care of a yard or garden or to pay someone to do the job. Many places have this task included into the monthly payments.

Before you put an offer on a home, measure it yourself. You will feel better once you know that the physical square footage is equivalent to what the seller has listed publicly. These numbers should be fairly close to each other, to a tolerance of about 100 sq ft. If they don?t match, find out more about the property and any changes that were made.

TIP! If your employment is unstable, take precautions if you are planning to purchase a home. When you put your John Hancock on the mortgage paperwork, the responsibility of making the monthly payments is on your head, regardless of any changes in circumstances.

Look at properties and do your homework before you buy them. Even for rental property, you should look at some important features before purchasing. One of these is sustainability. Has the property been well-maintained, so that you won?t need to make expensive repairs? The second thing to consider it the location. Where the property is located should be a critical part of your decision, because it will be for your tenants. A good investment should be in a safe neighborhood with access to different stores, schools and job opportunities. You should consider the income in the area in which you are buying. This is different from physical location, because you should keep in mind that a high rent area is definitely a better location than a low rent area. In a place with high rent, location is not always as important as it might be for someone with fewer options in a lower rent area.

When deciding on an agent, it is important to have a list of questions already planned out. Ask them not only the number of homes they have sold in the past year, but also, how many were the type of home you are looking to buy. The agent?s responses to these questions will provide you with the information you need to reach a decision.

Just like any other product, your home should have a warranty. When you are buying a new home from the person who built it, or from an owner, get a warranty. The person who built the home should give you a warranty if he or she is confident in their work. The last owner should be prepared to obtain a home warranty that is valid for a minimum period of 12 months in case of any necessary repairs.

TIP! Before you sign a lease agreement for a rental in the future, you should ensure you talk to the future landlord you will have about whether you will have a garden, and if so, who will do the gardening. Some rentals will make you take care of this chore, while others will include a gardener as part of the rent.

You need to hire good representation in the form of a real estate agent after deciding to purchase a property. Someone who is trustworthy is most preferable. For an area you?re unfamiliar with, check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints against agents and how they were resolved. Although real estate agents are doing their job, it?s important to find one that is looking out for your best interests.

Look for homes that carry pre-foreclosure notices. Pre-foreclosure properties are definitely a real estate option to be considered, especially if you have the time to search for the right investment property. When a homeowner is unable to meet payment obligations and is in imminent danger of losing the house, the home is called a pre-foreclosure. You can advertise your own willingness to purchases houses with cash, or consult lenders to get lists of properties approaching pre-foreclosure. No matter how you find the property, speak with the owners to understand the amount they owe, and be prepared to pay them at least a few thousand over that amount. You can sometimes benefit greatly by this method, particularly if the payoff is much lower than market value.

TIP! It is essential to hire a trustworthy real estate agent. It is possible to find information from both the Internet and the Better Business Bureau.

Buying a property is likely to be the largest purchase you make as far as value is concerned, so the decision needs to be weighed appropriately. The advice in this piece can help you steer clear of common real estate traps, and make the best decision

British Airways tests eliminating online check-in

It?s a familiar process to most air travelers by now: Watch the clock before your trip and log on to a computer within 24 hours of your flight to check in online. But even that simple routine, which has been a huge improvement over the previous tradition of standing in a long queue at the airport, might go away in the future ? something industry watchers say isn?t necessarily a plus.

New US home sales edged down 0.3 percent in August

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Sales of new homes in the United States dipped slightly in August from July but the median price of homes sold during the month rose by a record amount.

New-home sales edged down to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 373,000 in August, a dip of 0.3 percent from July's revised rate of 374,000, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That had been the fastest pace since April 2010 when government tax credits were boosting sales.

Sales in August were up 27.7 percent from the pace a year ago. But even with that gain, new-home sales remain well below the annual pace of 700,000 that economists consider healthy.

The median price of a new home jumped 11.2 percent in August to $256,900, the biggest one-month gain on record.

The median sales price was up 17 percent compared to August 2011. The $256,900 median price in August was the highest sales price since new homes sold for $262,600 in March 2007, a period when prices were coming down from the peaks reached during the housing boom.

By region of the country, sales rose by the most in the Northeast, climbing 20 percent. Sales were up 1.8 percent in the Midwest and 0.9 percent in the West. However, sales in the South, which accounts for nearly half of new home sales, dropped 4.9 percent.

Robert Kavcic, an economist at BMO Capital Markets, said the August report was "more evidence that a recovery in U.S. housing is taking root."

Kavcic said that the drop in sales in the South could have been influenced by disruptions from Hurricane Isaac in August.

The housing market has been making a modest but steady recovery, helped by the Federal Reserve's efforts to give the economy a boost through lower interest rates. The Fed earlier this month announced a third round of bond buying in an effort to stimulate the economy and attack unemployment which has been stuck above 8 percent since early 2009.

Sales of previously occupied homes jumped in August to the highest level since May 2010. Builder confidence is at a six-year high and construction of single-family homes rose last month to the fastest annual rate in more than two years. However, even with the gains, home sales and construction remain well below healthy levels.

On Tuesday, the Standard & Poor's/Case Shiller home price index showed home prices increased 1.2 percent in July compared to July 2011. That was the second straight year-over-year price gain after two years when prices had fallen every month compared to the same month in the previous year.

Glencore cuts down Kazzinc deal, eyes 70 percent stake

HONG KONG/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Trader Glencore has revised down its plan to boost its majority stake in Kazakh zinc producer Kazzinc, targeting an increase to just under 70 percent in a deal that will involve less cash than the original agreement a year ago.

The move, at a time when Glencore is in its final stage of efforts to take over miner Xstrata , could reassure credit ratings agencies which had pointed to the Kazzinc deal as one where Glencore, with a rating of two notches above junk, could cut back on cash strain.

In a statement released overnight, which prompted a halt in trading of Glencore's Hong Kong shares, the trader said it had agreed to lift its 50.7 percent stake in Kazzinc to 69.61 percent for up to $1.4 billion in shares and cash. The deal will include at least 176 million shares, to be issued to the seller, Verny Capital.

At the time of its initial public offering in May last year, Glencore had said it was targeting an increase to 93 percent for a total of $3.2 billion, including $2.2 billion in cash and $1 billion in new shares.

Glencore had said in August it was reviewing the structure of the Kazzinc deal, in part, analysts have said, because a spin-off of the subsidiary's gold assets is unlikely in the current environment. The deal should complete this year.

Glencore is in the final stage of its long-awaited deal to buy the shares in miner Xstrata it does not already own. Britain's takeover regulator has given Xstrata until Oct 1 to decide whether to accept a revised offer from Glencore.

Glencore, already Xstrata's biggest shareholder, raised its offer to 3.05 shares for every Xstrata share held from a previous offer of 2.8 shares, in a last-ditch attempt to rescue the deal after Xstrata's second-biggest investor, Qatar Holding, demanded improved terms in June.

While improving the offer, Glencore also tweaked the terms of the deal, allowing Glencore's chief executive Ivan Glasenberg to take over the helm of the combined business from Xstrata chief Mick Davis within six months.

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes, Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything? Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he's a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mystical-minded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy's old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a "history" with Jones. Whatever their personal differences, Indy and Marion become partners in one action-packed adventure after another, ranging from wandering the snake pits of the Well of Souls to surviving the pyrotechnic unearthing of the sacred Ark. A joint project of Hollywood prodigies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, with a script co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Philip Kaufman, among others, Raiders of the Lost Ark is not so much a movie as a 115-minute thrill ride. Costing 22 million dollars (nearly three times the original estimate), Raiders of the Lost Ark reaped 200 million dollars during its first run. It was followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1985) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), as well as a short-lived TV-series "prequel." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

1 Surefire Trick to Understand Your Wife Better | Some Wise Guy

brickwallHave you ever gotten in trouble for saying something stupid? Yeah, me neither. (Why did my nose suddenly grow a foot?)

Generally speaking, men are not as in tune with our emotions as our wives and we don?t understand the impact of our words.

One root cause of marital conflict I?ve noticed is a lack of perspective. Husbands and wives (like all human beings) see situations and their relationship from their unique point of view.

A husband who is the primary bread-winner may come home after a long day at the office and (foolishly) ask his wife, ?What did you do all day??

NOTE: The man in this situation may genuinely be asking his wife how her day was and just chose his words poorly.

My wife is a teacher, but during the summer (and while she is on maternity leave) there is a tendency for me to place greater value on what I accomplished during the day versus the role she plays as a seasonal stay-at-home-mom.

Here is a hypothetical conversation:

Me: Hey Babe, how was your day?
LK: Okay, I took the kids to school, vacuumed and went to the post office.
Me: That?s it? I sent 150 emails, attended 2 hours of meetings and?a conference call with London.
LK: ? <insert ?the look?>

On the surface it may seem like my day was more productive. How wrong an assessment that would be.

This last week I had the privilege to stay home from work to spend time with our new baby girl and help LK with household stuff during her recovery.?It gave me such an appreciation for what she does on a daily basis I will never compare our ?productivity? again.

Time does not pass at the same pace at home as it does at the office. Getting the kids up, dressed, fed and out the door in time to catch the bus to school is not as easy as I thought. Especially considering I have to be up, dressed and fed as well.

Running errands to the bank, grocery store and post office takes way more time than it should.?The benefit I have at work is all my to-do items happen in the same geographic location. Stay-at-home parents have to factor in driving, waiting in lines and queueing up at the bus stop.

I was under the (naive) impression that I would have all sorts of time last week for reading, writing and naps. That didn?t happen once. Not a single day did I fail to look at the clock and realize ?Whoa! It?s already time to go pick up the kids from school.?

As a husband (or wife) the difference between good and great may be a little perspective. Walk a mile (or a week) in your spouse?s shoes before risking strife or a night sleeping on the couch.

Question: How do you maintain perspective in your relationships? Have you ever asked the wrong question?
