Reid among 5 NFL coaches sacked in firing frenzy

By lunchtime Monday, five NFL coaches were looking for work.

With the regular season ending the day before, the firings came at a furious clip and within a span of 90 minutes the following were sacked: Andy Reid in Philadelphia, Lovie Smith in Chicago, Pat Shurmur in Cleveland, Romeo Crennel in Kansas City and Chan Gailey in Buffalo,

Though he also had a losing record, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan held onto his job while general manager Mike Tannenbaum was let go. Jacksonville fired its GM, Gene Smith. And the Browns made it a clean sweep, dismissing GM Tom Heckert along with Shurmur.

Reid was the longest tenured of the coaches, removed after 14 seasons and a Super Bowl appearance in 2005 ? a loss to New England.

Smith spent nine seasons with the Bears, leading them to the Super Bowl in 2006 ? a loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Gailey was dumped after three seasons with the Bills; Shurmur after two; and Crennel had one full season with the Chiefs.

Reid took over a 3-13 team in 1999, drafted Donovan McNabb with the No. 2 overall pick and quickly turned the franchise into a title contender.

He is the winningest coach in club history and led them to a run of four straight NFC championship games, a streak that ended with a trip to the NFL title game. But the team hasn't won a playoff game since 2008 and after last season's 8-8 finish, owner Jeffrey Lurie said he was looking for improvement this year. Instead, it was even worse. The Eagles finished 4-12.

Shurmur went 9-23 in his two seasons with the Browns, who will embark on yet another offseason of change ? the only constant in more than a decade of futility. Cleveland has lost at least 11 games in each of the past five seasons and made the playoffs just once since returning to the NFL as an expansion team in 1999.

Crennel took over with three games left in the 2011 season after GM Scott Pioli fired Todd Haley. Kansas City will have the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft as a result of having one of the worst seasons in its 53-year history. The only other time the Chiefs finished 2-14 was 2008, the year before Pioli was hired.

Gailey, the former Dallas Cowboys coach, compiled a 16-32 record in his three seasons in Buffalo, never doing better than 6-10.

Smith and the Bears went 10-6 this season and just missed a playoff spot. But Chicago started 7-1 this year and has struggled to put together a productive offense throughout Smith's tenure. His record was 81-63 with the Bears.

Chicago registers its 500th homicide of 2012 ? the highest number since 2008

Public-housing and school policies, gang activity, access to guns, and budget cuts for social programs have all been cited as factors in Chicago?s homicide rate.

By Mark Guarino,?Staff writer / December 29, 2012

Young men walk past the barred window of a business in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. The violence in 2012 ? 500 homicides in the city so far ? has gripped a handful of neighborhoods, including this one.

Rahm Emanuel?s first full year as Chicago mayor ends on a tragic note: The city marked its 500th homicide Thursday evening, making 2012 the deadliest year in the city since 2008.

Overall, Chicago homicides are at a historic low compared to decades past ? 928 in 1991, for example. But the last time Chicago homicides topped 500 was in 2008, when the number was 513. After that, murders had been falling. In 2011, there were 433 homicides.

Why homicide rates trend up or down is not easily explained by a single year, and it most certainly requires examining a series of complex factors including systemic unemployment, economic disenfranchisement, easy access to weapons, and ? specifically in Chicago ? the dismantling of public housing that started two decades ago and has coincided with the closings of public schools in distressed neighborhoods.

?The public-housing and school policies did a lot to undermine the fabric of marginalized communities on the South and West Sides of Chicago. That unraveling of the fabric continues to drive the desperation, the depression, the self-medication that contributes to a lot of this violence,? says Lance Williams, assistant director of the Jacob C. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago.

2012 enters the record books. Were you paying attention? A news quiz.

School closings in impoverished neighborhoods and the increased push for privately operated charter schools became a major issue of contention during the public-teacher strike in September. The Emanuel administration has long said that while facing a ballooning budget deficit, it can?t afford to operate so many schools, especially those where student populations are dwindling.

Homicides in Chicago attracted national media attention early this summer when 7-year-old Heaven Sutton became the city?s 251st fatality, killed by a random bullet while operating her front-lawn candy stand on the city?s West Side. Mayor Emanuel and police superintendent Garry McCarthy blamed the growing violence on neighborhood gang factions, which they say are responsible for 80 percent of the shootings.

Gang factions are small groups that have splintered from the monolithic, often historic, crime organizations that date back decades. As many as 600 factions exist today, the Chicago Police Department says. Moreover, Chicago has surpassed Los Angeles in total gang membership and activity, crime experts say.

A Brief But Informative History of Cellphones

A Brief But Informative History of Cellphones Cellphones, or cellular mobile phones, are indispensable tools these days. These communication devices not only are utilized to make and get calls or texts, but may also be applied for sending and getting emails, logging in to the web, playing games, movies, music, and more. Here?s a short but refreshing appear at the background of cellphones. The Development of Wireless Engineering in the Early 1900?s In 1908, an inventor named Nathan B. Stubblefield was granted patent by the US government, to develop a wireless telephone technologies process. In 1921, the very first utilization of a radio telephony service was noticed on first-class passenger trains that run the Berlin-Hamburg route in Germany. In the US, the initial radio receiver was produced from the Galvin Manufacturing Company, and it was called the Walkie Talkie. The model was referred to as the Motorola SC-300. The first persons to make use of the Walkie Talkie were the police departments, who liked it since it made available police personnel a continuous source of communication, even after they were mobile. Mobile Phone Technology after Planet War 2 The very first official ?cellphones? had been utilized by the Swedish Police in 1946, and it functioned by connecting a hand-held telephone for the central telephone network. These early cellphones were equivalent to two-way radio phones that were utilized in automobiles and taxis for portable communication. Engineers from Bell Labs inside the US also created a engineering or architecture made from hexagonal cells, and these had been created for telephone use in automobiles. In 1950, radio phones were used by the US military for communication and civil services Cellphone Development in the ?60s The electronic components and elements which are applied in today?s generation of cellphones were created throughout the 1960?s. Within the 60?s cellphone technologies was currently readily available, nonetheless its use was only restricted to a specific block of areas, because the cell locations had been only base stations which covered a restricted land area. For the duration of these times, calls may very well be made, but in the event the cellphone user traveled beyond the boundaries with the cell area, the signal got blocked or went dead. Cellphones inside the star phone 70?s and 80?s In 1971, A US communications corporation, AT&T, requested a public cellular telephone service from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The request on the other hand, was only processed following a decade. The early cell telephone frequencies were of 824 to 894 MHz Band for the Advanced Mobile Telephone Service or AMPS. The advent of analog cellphone service began in 1982, and this continued until 1990. Cellphones within the 21st Century In 1999, the first-ever full-fledged World wide web telephone service was introduced by Japanese organization NTT Docomo. The following year, mobile phone advertising very first appeared in Finland, when a free SMS text service was launched, and was sponsored by advertisers. In 2001, the pre-commercial 3G trial network was also launched by NTT Docomo, and soon right after, Sony and Ericsson agreed to create a joint enterprise, which was termed Sony-Ericsson, for the cube tablet pc development and manufacture of high-end cellphones.

Stop Bleeding Hangnails with Lip BalmOh hangnails. We know we should wait until we have access to nail clippers to remove them, but I'm often impatient enough that I just rip them out and sometimes they bleed. Reddit user NicholassBalls points out that using a bit of ChapStick or other lip balms on the hangnail will stop the bleeding and take a bit of the sting out of the small wound.

Lip balm works well for other uses as well. A similar use we previously covered was stopping bloody shaving nicks, but you can also use it to fix a stuck drawer, help install light bulbs in a sticky socket, and quiet squeaky shoes. We've even shown you how to make your own moisturizing lip balm. It's not duct tape or paracord, but it does have a place in most of our pockets in Fall and Winter so learn an alternate use or two! Abbas: Israel reduced security cooperation

JERUSALEM (AP) ? The Palestinian president has claimed Israel has reduced its security cooperation with Palestinians in the West Bank to protest the successful bid for upgraded status at the United Nations, in an interview published Friday.

Israel's military denied the charge, saying security cooperation continues.

Mahmoud Abbas said Israeli soldiers have started entering West Bank cities without Palestinian coordination. He spoke in a meeting with a dovish Israeli lawmaker and Israel's daily Haaretz.

An Abbas aide, Tayeb Abdel Rahim, said Israel's army detained 200 Palestinian officers in recent months, mostly for short interrogations.

Israeli defense officials responded Friday that soldiers enter Palestinian cities only when they think Palestinians are not providing enough support. They spoke anonymously in line with government regulations.

Israel earlier suggested the possibility of reducing security cooperation in retaliation for the Palestinian U.N. campaign.

Abbas also reiterated his longstanding threat to dismantle the Palestinian Authority, which he believes would leave Israel responsible for governing the West Bank's Palestinians.

Critics say Abbas is unlikely to follow through on the threat and may be using it as a pressure tactic. Tens of thousands of Palestinian civil servants and security forces rely on the Palestinian Authority for their livelihood, and the Palestinian Authority is the keystone of a series of partial peace accords with Israel that benefit the Palestinian economy and influence other aspects of life.

How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?

Since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, we at Slate have been wondering how many people are dying from guns in America every day.

That information is surprisingly hard to come by. The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, for example, has a tally atop its website of ?people shot in America.? That number, though, is an estimate, based on the number of gun injuries and deaths recorded by the CDC in 2008 and 2009, the most recent years for which statistics are available. It seems shocking that when guns are in the headlines every day, there?s no one attempting to create a real-time chronicle of the deaths attributable to guns in the United States.

Well, someone is. Since this summer, the anonymous creator of the Twitter feed @GunDeaths has been doing his best to compile those statistics, tweeting every reported death he can find. He was inspired, he told us in a phone interview, by the Aurora, Colo., shootings and simply wanted to call daily attention to the toll that guns take. Now Slate is partnering with @GunDeaths to create this interactive feature, ?Gun Deaths in America Since Newtown.?

Deaths since Newtown:

Age:

All

Adult

Teen

Child

Each victim under 13 years of age is designated "child"; from 13 to 17: "teen"; 18 and older: "adult."

Of course, this data is incomplete. Not all reports get caught by @GunDeaths? news alerts or his followers. Suicides, which are estimated to make up as much as 60 percent of gun deaths, typically go unreported. Nevertheless, we at Slate want to assemble this data as best we can.

And the more people who are paying attention, the better the data will be. You can help us draw a more complete picture of gun violence in America. If you know about a gun death in your community that isn?t represented here, please tweet @GunDeaths with a citation, and he?ll add it to his feed. (If you?re not on Twitter, you can email slatedata@gmail.com.) His data feeds our interactive feature.

And if you?d like to use this data yourself for your own projects, it?s open. You can download it here.

Starbucks urges lawmakers to 'come together' in a retail campaign

(Reuters) - Starbucks Corp will use its ubiquitous coffee cups to tell U.S. lawmakers to come up with a deal to avoid going over the "fiscal cliff" and triggering automatic tax hikes and spending cuts.

Chief Executive Howard Schultz is urging workers in Starbucks' roughly 120 Washington-area shops to write "come together" on customers' cups on Thursday and Friday, as U.S. President Barack Obama and lawmakers return to work and attempt to revive fiscal cliff negotiations that collapsed before the Christmas holiday.

Starbucks' cup campaign aims to send a message to sharply divided politicians and serve as a rallying cry for the public in the days leading up to lawmakers' January 1 deadline to deliver a plan to avert harsh across-the-board government spending reductions and tax increases that could send the United States back into recession.

"We're paying attention, we're greatly disappointed in what's going on and we deserve better," Schultz told Reuters in a telephone interview.

The CEO said he has joined a growing list of high-powered business leaders, politicians and financial experts in endorsing the Campaign to Fix the Debt, (www.fixthedebt.org) a well-funded nonpartisan group that is leaning on lawmakers to put the United States' financial house in order.

Starbucks plans to amplify its "come together" message via new and old media, including Twitter and Facebook posts, coverage on AOL's local news websites and advertisements in The Washington Post and The New York Times.

"If (talks) do not progress, we will make this much bigger," Schultz said of the messaging campaign.

Schultz is no stranger to using the world's biggest coffee chain as a platform to advocate for more political cooperation in Washington.

During the debt ceiling debate in August 2011, he made a splash by calling for a boycott of political contributions to U.S. lawmakers until they struck a fair and bipartisan deal on the country's debt, revenue and spending.

"We are facing such dysfunction, irresponsibility and lack of leadership" less than two years after the debt ceiling crisis, Schultz said.

Washington narrowly avoided a U.S. government default, but not before down-to-the-wire wrangling prompted the country's first-ever debt rating downgrade.

"There is something so wrong that we can be here again and not have the ability to put party aside for the betterment of the country," said Schultz. "We have the same language and rhetoric. Unfortunately we aren't learning much."

(AP) ? The Red Sox have acquired All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a six-player deal.

Boston completed the trade Wednesday, also receiving infielder Brock Holt. The Red Sox gave up right-handers Mark Melancon and Stolmy Pimentel, infielder Ivan DeJesus Jr. and first baseman-outfielder Jerry Sands.

Over the past two seasons, the right-handed Hanrahan had 76 saves, fourth most in the National League, and a 2.24 ERA. Last season, he was 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA and 36 saves.

Holt spent most of last season at Double-A Altoona, then hit .292 in 24 games with the Pirates, all in September.

Melancon was 0-2 with a 6.20 ERA in 41 relief appearances in his only season with Boston. Pimentel spent the season at Double-A Portland. Sands and DeJesus were obtained in a trade that sent Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 25.

The Red Sox also announced the signing of free agent shortstop Stephen Drew, who agreed to a one-year contract early last week. That reported $9.5 million deal was contingent on the former Oakland Athletic and Arizona Diamondback passing a physical.

Christmas Home Tour - Our Family Room | A Blissful Nest

I thought it would be fun to take a tour of our family room and show you parts of my happy place. With all the craziness going on in the world right now I am nesting more than ever with my little family and truly feeling truly blessed for them. So with that . . .

Welcome to my home ? Christmas Edition!

This is the room we live in most so it is definitely the most decorated room in the house and why I am sharing this first for our Christmas Home Tour. The focal point of the room is our fireplace. We did not have a fireplace back in California so I feel spoiled having THE perfect spot to display some of my favorite pieces.

I have my prized Pottery Barn sea fan shadow box art as the main anchor to the top of the mantel and my white flower vases flanking either side.

I just filled these with some berries that match the mesh and berrie garland I draped along the front of the mantel.

This year a client had asked me to create her a reindeer art print with the sentiment ?Believe?. I loved it so much that I made one for myself too!

And at the bottom of this post you too can have this print! A little Christmas present from me to you my sweet friends.

I went a little crazy with ribbon this year thanks to Hobby Lobby! I wrapped, tied and added a bow to anything that I could! Touches of my favorite (low maintenance greenery!) were my touches of green ? boxwood and moss.

And a special little man has graced my mantel!

Since we are building fires we need to have wood piled up and ready to use. So I decided to wrap them up! I used wrapping paper from the $1 bins at Target and tossed in my moss wreaths from our Christmas Wish Party decorations.

A stacked pile of old soda crates on the other side of the fireplace, is a nice drink table for our chair nearby.

I hold this little bookcase very near and dear. My husband made it with his grandfather as a birthday gift for me many years ago. I put my favorite trinkets on it including coral from trips to Hawaii, black earthen ware from our honeymoon to Portugal, favorite photos and design books.

Of course I Christmas-fied the top!

Lastly our writing desk got dressed up with a little mesh, berries and Christmas balls.

Have fun this holiday season and enjoy EVERY moment with your family!

Here is a sweet little present to download to place in your home: ?

Cruz visits home of Giants fan, 6, killed in Conn.

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz has visited the home of the 6-year-old Connecticut shooting victim who was buried in a replica Cruz jersey.

Jack Pinto was among 20 children shot to death Friday in Newtown. Several elementary school-age children played touch football in the front yard of his family's home Tuesday. Many wore Giants jerseys or Newtown football or wrestling shirts as they laughed, smiled and hugged.

The children and their families left after several hours. Kids carried autographed Giants footballs and jerseys.

About 45 minutes later, Cruz left the home in an SUV and an escort of five police cruisers, sirens blaring. He later tweeted that he has "much love to the entire Pinto family. Great people with huge hearts."

Several people leaving the home confirmed Cruz was there.

A Review of The Investor's Manifesto by William J. Bernstein

Investor's ManifestoTitle: The Investor?s Manifesto
Author: William J. Bernstein
Publisher: Wiley (2010)
My Rating: 5/5

I must warn you at the outset that The Investor?s Manifesto is not a book on personal finance. If you want advice on paying down debt, saving for college, or navigating your mortgage payments, you should look elsewhere. But that fact and one slow chapter in the book?s middle are my only hesitations in recommending William Bernstein?s book.

The Investor?s Manifesto is written for a specific reader ? a person desirous of learning more about investing in the stock market ? so my recommendation is only to persons who fit that description. But in today?s society, where nearly all retirement accounts are self-managed, it behooves all of us to know at least the basics of investing. If you want to learn more, start here.

This book focuses on long-term investing rather than day-trading, and Bernstein has this key belief: ?The goal [of investing] is not to maximize the chances of getting rich, but rather to simultaneously allow for a comfortable retirement and to minimize the odds of dying poor? (p. 48). This book is a particularly well-written and insightful primer on that type of investing.

Bernstein himself jokes that friends and family found his previous books tedious and overly technical, so he wrote this one with the common reader in mind. No matter your level of familiarity with the topic, investing will come alive in this short book.

One chapter on neuroscience slows the book down, but Bernstein included it in order to discuss common pitfalls for the average investor. I understand his intent and appreciated the information, but that chapter bogged down an otherwise fast and intriguing read.

This is one of my few recent 5-star ratings, and the book deserves your attention if you would like to learn more about investing for your future. This book won?t teach you to get rich quick, but it will educate you on how to build toward a secure financial future.

Former aide to mayor charged in credit card scandal

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) ?

A former top aide to Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson accused of using a city-issued credit card for personal purchases was arrested Tuesday.

Lisa Serna-Mayorga, daughter of former Sacramento Mayor Joe Serna, was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on charges of misappropriation of public funds, grand theft of public funds, forgery and making or drawing worthless checks, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office said in a news release.

Serna-Mayorga was taken into custody by Sacramento police officers. Her bail was set at $50,000.

Serna-Mayorga, who resigned in July, allegedly used a Sacramento City credit card from July 2009 to June 2012 for personal items that totaled more than $19,000, according to a criminal complaint.

Some of the items Serna-Mayorga is accused of charging to the city credit card include Disneyland trips, hotels in Bodega Bay and Monterey, grocery bills, movies and iTunes games, according to court documents.

Serna-Mayorga had worked as the council operations manager before being appointed to a position in the mayor?s office just weeks before the allegations surfaced.

The alleged credit card misuse was linked to her tenure as a council operations manager.

Serna-Mayorga's brother, Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna, said in a released statement: "I loved my sister before this incident, I love her now, and I will continue to do so as she deals with this."

In June, an internal audit found that Serna-Mayorga did not submit the required paperwork for documenting purchases. She later admitted that some of the purchases on the city card were personal, according to the district attorney's office.

Serna-Mayorga is also accused of writing three checks worth more than $9,000 to the city of Sacramento after the internal audit, but stop payments were put on the checks before they could be deposited by the city.

Craig Agranoff: Domain Names, Trademarks and Infringements

Most of us have probably run into this: you are starting a new website or expanding your business' current sites to include a new domain, but the domain that matches your trademarked name is owned by someone else. Worse? They're just squatting on it, waiting to sell it someone rather than using it for a website. Often, these sellers will be asking thousands of dollars for the domain name.

Do you pay that money to purchase it? Or should you enforce your trademark (TM) and try to take the domain on infringement grounds?

The legalities of domains and trademarks are not very cut-and-dry. In fact, they're extremely convoluted and even experts in the field can run into questions that they can't answer. There are two basic criteria that most trademark infringements, in regards to domain name registrations, must meet before they can be enforced. These define what's called "bad faith registration."

Dates of registration -- the trademark should usually have been registered (meaning the filing date, not the award date) before the domain name, otherwise the domain is probably not infringing on the TM. The exceptions are when domains are sold or transferred after TM registration, especially if those sales are to competitors to the TM owner.

Foreknowledge of the TM -- the person who owns the domain can sell or transfer the domain, or even legally purchase the domain after TM registration if he or she was not aware of the trademark. In other words, in order for infringement to be shown, the TM owner must have informed the domain owner that he or she owns a trademarked domain.

As an example to illustrate these two points, let us assume that a person has purchased "ABC123.com" and is planning to try to resell the domain because of its search engine optimization possibilities and perceived value due to its top level (dot com) low character count (only six). In the business of domaining, this is a common practice since domains are usually valued by keyword, length, and what kind of dot they carry. Dot com carries more value than dot tv or dot co, for example.

Now the ABC-123 Toy Company owns the trademark for "ABC 123" and has decided to begin a new toy line under the name. They registered the TM a couple of years before, but have not been using it up to this point. When they go to register the domain, they see that the domain owner who recently purchased the domain is asking $10,000 for it.

They have three options: offer to buy it, sue to take it, or inform the owner of the infringement and see if he or she will hand it over. In the first case, a lot of trouble and attorney fees can be saved, but a lot of money is spent regardlessly. In the second case, the fight could drag out and end up costing more than the purchase price. In the third case, the seller may not have any plans to hand it over and might jack up the price now that he knows someone really wants it.

Except that in the third case, the seller has now been informed that someone owns the TM for the domain they have and so the only legal buyer is now the ABC-123 Toy Company. If the seller attempts to sell to another party, or does sell to another party, then the seller or the new owner can be taken to arbitration and will almost certainly lose the domain (with no recompense from ABC-123) because the seller had previously been informed that the domain name infringed on a trademark.

That opens a new can of worms for the seller, who is now likely liable under the law for fraud.

The domain name buying and selling business is not as simple as it used to be, but domainers are usually aware that some of their domains are, eventually, going to infringe on someone's trademark registration. Talking with domainers that I know, I've found that most of them take this as a part of their business and when someone demands a domain based on TM infringements, they will check the trademark and if it's valid, they just hand over the domain. Otherwise, it becomes useless to them as they can no longer (easily) sell it without a lot of headaches appearing post-sale.

There are, of course, exceptions to these rules -- nothing is hard and fast. Neither am I an attorney, so what I tell you here is not legal advice and should not be taken as such. Still, the world of trademarks and domain names is convoluted and the two often bump heads.

How about you? Have you been on the receiving end of either of these scenarios where a domain's ownership was disputed because of a trademark? Let's talk about it.

Benjamin R. Barber: The Next Speech President Obama Needs to Make in the Wake of the Newtown Massacre

On Friday, December 14th, President Obama addressed the nation in the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Conn. as a parent. Here is the speech I believe he needs to give to Americans now as president:

"My Fellow Citizens: I speak to you today not as a parent, though as a parent I grieve with you for our children. I speak to you not as a fellow citizen, though as a fellow citizen I share your pain and hope to assuage your sorrow. I speak to you rather as president and chief executive officer of the United States of America whose first duty it is to protect American citizens -- above all, those who cannot protect themselves, our children. A sovereign government acquires the right to govern only when it keeps the governed safe. Before anything else, the social contract must confer security on its citizens.

As a parent, I grieve with the affected families. As an individual, I ask myself how we might better recognize and treat the mental illnesses that contribute to these heinous massacres. But as your president I am bound to ask what can be done -- what I can do now -- to regulate, control and where necessary ban the micro-weapons of mass destruction with which the unstable and sick are making war on the unprotected and the vulnerable. As president, it is not enough for me to share you grief and counsel your sorrow, I must and I will confront those who defend weapons more zealously than children; who confound sport and safety with automatic weapons, large volume magazines and military ammunition designed to maim and kill; who hide behind a 200-year-old constitutional concern for militias well-armed with muskets in order to rationalize ownership of modern weapons for which there is no conceivable civilian use.

To those who say it is people and not guns that kill people, I say that while mental illness and murderous behavior is universal, semi-automatic weapons are multipliers that turn individual tragedies into community massacres. Around the same moment, 20 young children were being murdered in Connecticut, a crazed man was attacking children in Central China. But here is the difference: according to initial reports, not one of those children died. All 20 children attacked in Connecticut lost their lives.

I need not remind you, my fellow citizens, that we have nearly as many guns as people in our country -- 300 million weapons; and that the horror in Connecticut was preceded recently, just in this year, by a horror in an Oregon mall, and other horrific mass killings in Minneapolis, Tulsa and Wisconsin -- and of course in that Aurora, Colo. cinema were 12 died just last summer. Indeed, I speak to you today from this press room named for James Brady, shot in the gun attack on President Reagan.

As your president, I can no more ignore these acts than I can ignore attacks by foreign terrorists on the security of our nation. However unhappy their stories, however much we need to preempt their behaviors, their deeds make these gunmen domestic terrorists. They must be combated as such with all the resources of our government.

I am therefore announcing today that I have instructed the attorney general's office, the FBI and other appropriate officials to work closely with me, with state and municipal police authorities across the nation, to develop a comprehensive strategy to protect Americans -- and especially our children -- against gun violence. I will propose legislation to regulate, control and where appropriate ban the weapons that are the instruments if not the cause of so much murder and mayhem. For murder and mayhem on the scale of recent years is an offense not just to all Americans, but to the sovereignty of our national government.

Furthermore, understanding the thicket of political and legal issues we will face in acting legislatively, even in such modest ways as reinstating the ban on assault weapons, I will also move immediately to invoke any and all powers that reside in the executive branch and within the law to take decisive action. My deep respect for the law means that I will welcome legal challenges to the measures I take; but my responsibility to sovereignty and the rule of law also means I will use every legal power I possess to act to curb this growing threat to the peace and security of our national community.

As a parent and your fellow citizen, I have only my compassion and prayers to give you. But we can no longer afford as a nation to defend our children against guns with nothing more than indignation and rhetoric. As your president, I therefore pledge the full weight and authority of my presidency, and all of the legal powers of the executive branch, to combat this intolerable scourge of gun violence."

Se7en + 1 's Favourite Games? Family Games; Classic Games and ...

Se7en + 1 ?s Favourite Games? Family Games; Classic Games and Card Games?

December 15th, 2012 ? No Comments

It is the season of Games in our house. It is December and a tradition to play a different ?game a day? in the weeks leading up to Christmas, yup twenty four games!!! In order for a game to pass the ?family? test it has to be a game almost all of us can partake in together, so from age 3, through the teens right through to my parents, who often join us for games. Mostly the tiny folk will sit on an older siblings lap and they will work as a team?

games

One thing, don?t for a moment think that games are a wonderfully peaceful event, where children sit around a coffee table playing on a rainy afternoon, while eating freshly baked cookies? The reality, is a little chaotic and a fair taste of insanity, in fact downright unpleasant unless I join in!!! Which is why games are so special, we all enjoy it? I stop what I am doing to play and the kids have my full attention? this is not the time for everyone to do their own creative thing? this requires concentrated effort for everyone to play along together. This post is a list of twenty-four games that our family have tried and tested and enjoyed? hope you enjoy them too!!!

Se7en + 1 Favourite Family Games

  1. Cadoo has to be our favourite family game ever ? everybody loves it? all of us from grandparents to toddlers love this game. The players have a number of timed challenges: They either have to model play do, act out, draw or puzzle it out. This game can get hysterically funny and have folk on the edge of their seats? There is a more grown-up version, Cranium, but as a family we prefer Cadoo the games are quicker and the challengers a lot more fun.
  2. Balloon Lagoon is another great game from the Cranium Family, it is a junior version of cadoo ? with four challenges: magnetic letters, jump the frogs, line the picture up and matching snacks. I thought this game was a bit young for my kids ? but the proof is in the playing and they all play together? games are quick about fifteen minutes and they play over and over and over again!!!
  3. Smart Mouth is another great family game? Two letter tiles are popped out of the machine and then the timer is set and the first to a word greater than four letters wins the round. We adapt it for our younger players? they are allowed 3 letter words and if our very beginner readers can shout out the letter sound they win the round?
  4. Beleduc Sweet Treats is a colour matching game for younger children? you throw the coloured dice and gather up the sweeties that have the same colours as the dice on them? who doesn?t want to collect candy!!! I have to say my girls all love this game and will play it a lot, and the boys ? not so much? just saying!!!
  5. Bananagrams and Appleletters: these two games are very similar and we love them? this is definitely a time for little folk to team up with an older sibling, as soon as my kids can sound out words they join in? spelling may be a little unconventional but it works and these are games that my kids could play every single day without question.
  6. Tri-onimos: This is a triangular domino game and you score points as you go? and the more elaborate the shape you construct the more points you earn too. The game works on a couple of levels from just trying to match up the numbers to strategising and plotting what they other players are able to do too?
  7. Sumoku: Is another numerical game that doesn?t feel like you are doing math. You have to construct a numerical crossword, where each line is a multiple of the number thrown on the dice. Easy even for beginner mathematicians to put something on the table, but quite challenging for players that are trying to use up all their pieces!!!

  8. And the se7en + 1th game:
  9. This is a game collection from Alex Toys and my kids love it, it hangs on our kitchen wall? and contains: checkers; snakes and ladders; Tic Tac Toe; Backgammon and Mancala. All the pieces are those nice spongy ? ?Alex Toy Pieces? ? fabulous bright kid appeal and hard to break or lose!!!

Se7en Favourite Classic Games

Meanwhile, what about se7en + 1 classic games that we play all the time?

Se7en + 1 Favourite Card Games

It is the easiest thing in the world to teach your kids a couple of card games and just have a pack of cards on hand wherever you are? permanent entertainment!!!
  1. Snap: Let?s begin with the easiest card game!!! Even little folk will love it!!! A game for two players.
  • Divide the cards equally amongst the players. Place the piles of cards face down in front of the players.
  • Together turn the cards over? if the cards don?t match numerically play again.
  • If the cards match then the first player to shout snap wins the pot of cards in the centre.
  • If the cards don?t match and a player shouts snap? there is no reward.
  • The player to win all the cards is the victor.
  • Rummy: If your kids can play rummy then it is easy to teach them any number of other card games.
    • Shuffle the cards and deal se7en cards to each player.
    • The remaining cards are placed face down in the centre and one card turned upwards? to begin the discard pile.
    • Each player tries to make groups of three or more cards? three or four of a kind of card or a string of sequential cards from the same family.
    • When it is your turn you may place any groups you have on the table and either collect a card from the pile and discard a card from your hand or pick up the top discard card if it will help you form a group. You may also add a card in your hand to any groups on the table if it fits.
    • The first person to be rid of all the cards in their hand wins.
  • War: This is a game for all level of players?
    • Divide the cards equally amongst the players? and placed in a pile face down in front of each player.
    • For a round: each player turns the top card over and the player with the highest card value wins the cards.
    • If the winning cards are equal then there is ?WAR? the opponents place three cards face down next to the matching cards. Then they turn the next card up? and the winning card ?wins? the round.
    • As soon as a player is out of cards they are out of the game.
  • Go Fish!!!
    • Shuffle the cards and deal se7en to each player. Place the remaining cards in the middle of the players.
    • The aim is to find pairs of cards? so the players first check if they have pairs of cards in their hands. Place any pairs on the table in front of them.
    • Then the game begins for real? the player asks any other player if they have a card that would make a pair with the card in their hand. If that player does have the required card then the player places the pair on the table and has another turn. If the person they ask does not have the card then they ?Go Fish? and add a card from the centre to their hand and the next person takes a turn.
    • the game is over when all players have no cards and then they count the piles of pairs in front of them. The player with the most pairs wins.
  • Crazy Eights: A fast furious game that can be played again and again and again? without pause!!!
    • Shuffle and deal each player se7en cards. Put the remaining cards in the centre and turn over the top card to start the discard pile.
    • Players need to look at their own cards. The player must place a card either of the same value or of the same suit on the pile.
    • If a player doesn?t have a card to place then he may place an eight on the pile and announce the suit they want in play.
    • If the player doesn?t have an eight either then they must draw a card from the pile until they have a card they can play.
    • The player to discard all their cards first is the winner.
  • Spoons: Another game that tosses the ?quiet game of cards? idea out of the window? this is loud fast and fun.
    • Players sit in a circle with a pile of spoons in the centre? one less spoon than the number of players.
    • Each player is dealt four cards? and the rest placed face down in the middle.
    • The player collects a card. If it improves the hand then the player keeps it otherwise they pass the card onto the player on their left.
    • The player on the left does the same? the game naturally speeds up and cards start passing furiously.
    • The first player to collect four of a kind quietly takes a spoon.
    • When the other players notice they quickly grab a spoon.
    • The player without a spoon is eliminated? after a couple of rounds their will be one remaining champion.
  • SlapJack: Another not so quiet card game?
    • Deal the card equally into face down piles in front of each player.
    • Each player takes a turn to quickly place their card face up in the middle of the game.
    • If the card is a Jack then everyone quickly slaps their hand down on the jack? the player who slaps the jack first wins the whole pile of cards.
    • If a player slaps the wrong card then they must forfeit a card to the player that placed that card on the pile.
    • If a player loses all their cards they may play out the round and if they manage to ?slap Jack? and win the pile they may continue to play ? if they don?t they are out of the game.
    • The player to win all the cards is the victor.

    And the se7en + 1th
  • Uno Card Game: By far our family?s favourite card game. Everyone loves and adores this game and we can play it for hours and hours and hours? it is simple, it is fast and it is fun? what more do you need!!!

  • Games for Little People:

    DSC_0013

I have to add that I have recently found a collection of games that even really young children can play and have a heap of fun with? Beleduc games? We have tried Candy that we mentioned above; Torreta, which is a balancing, colour matching game and fun; Pomelo is a game that requires gathering skills? they have to collect the apples off the tree and place them in a basket, when the timer is finished they gat a little jar of jam for each apple? very sweet and lovely ? very popular with all my girls; and finally Captain Kidd a pirate matching colours and treasures kind of game ? requires matching skills and memory? my youngest five loved this!!!

    IMG_2034

We have been able get Beleduc Games locally at one of our favourite toy stores: ELE Toys, we have blogged about this fabulous toy store, ELE Toys before? They lent us a couple of these games to try out and our kids really enjoyed them!!!

That?s it? a collection of games? You are welcome to share some games you love playing? we love trying out new ones? In fact I have a couple stacked away in the cupboard that we need to try out still? and we could probably write a whole new game post after we have tried them all out.

This post is not a sponsored post. All but two of the games we have owned for a couple of years, we are simply showing you our favourite games from our game shelf. Ele-Toys lent us two of the games: Captain Kidd and Pomelo to try out for this post. The links to the games are affiliate links, which means if you do decide to buy them from Amazon we will earn a small fraction of the amount? Don?t feel compelled to shop at Amazon, though if there is a game you are interested in then it is a great place to read reviews and see if other folk have enjoyed the game too.
